Northern Portugal
Day 01: This morning, a pick-up awaits you at a centrally situated hotel in Lisbon. The tour kicks off towards Obidos, surrounded by medieval walls, windmills, and fruit trees, offering a glimpse of unique architecture and crafts, along with a taste of the renowned bitter cherry liquor. Next on the itinerary is Alcobaca, home to Portugal’s first and largest gothic church, serving as the resting place of Ines de Castro. A visit to the traditional fishing village and seaside resort of Nazare follows. Before reaching Fatima for the night, a stop is scheduled in Batalha, known for its famous monastery and the tomb of Henry the Navigator.
Day 02: Following your morning meal at the hotel, embark on a journey to Coimbra to explore one of the world’s oldest universities, featuring a splendid baroque library. Discover the St. Clara Church, the resting place of Queen St. Isabel. Later in the day, relish the charm of Aveiro, often referred to as Portugal’s Venice due to its picturesque canals and elegant boats. The tour proceeds to Porto.
Day 03: Following breakfast at the hotel, your guide will lead you to a charming riverside amphitheater adorned with ancient houses, palaces, and churches. Our journey continues to Minho, the picturesque northwest region of Portugal, renowned for its lush green landscapes and exquisite “green wine.” Pause in Guimaraes, the nation’s cradle and the birthplace of Portugal’s first king. Stroll through the historic center, immersing yourself in medieval vibes. Explore the Sacred Hill, home to the Castle, and the 15th-century Palace of the Dukes of Bragança. Next, venture to Braga, often referred to as the “Portuguese Rome” due to its abundance of religious architecture, including the country’s oldest Cathedral and the Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary with its renowned baroque stairways and gardens. Continue to Barcelos, a historic city celebrated for its traditional crafts and the iconic Galo de Barcelos (the rooster of Barcelos). The legend of the rooster has made it a symbol of Portuguese culture. Conclude the day by returning to Porto for an overnight stay.
Day 04: Discover the charm of Porto at your leisure, exploring its scenic beauty or unwinding at your hotel. Optional activities include a City Bus Tour, allowing you to hop on and off at various city highlights, or immerse yourself in the soulful Portuguese fado music during the evening.
Day 05: Following breakfast, set off for Amarante, a delightful town celebrated for fostering love and matrimony, as well as its picturesque market. Proceed to Vila Real to explore the enchanting gardens of Mateus Manor. Traverse the demarcated port region, passing through vineyards and captivating landscapes. Take a break in Lamego, graced by N.S. Remedios, and indulging in local delicacies are strongly advised. Press on to the scenic terrain of Viseu, a charming city nestled beneath a cathedral. Explore the bustling commercial zone and the city center.
Day 06: Following breakfast, the journey proceeds to Bussaco, renowned for its unique forest of exotic trees. Next is Tomar, a city intricately tied to the history of the Templars. The castle and Convent of Christ, initiated by Dom Gualdim Pais, the first Grand Master of the Order in Portugal, stand as remarkable landmarks. Evolving, the complex showcases diverse architectural styles and holds UNESCO World Heritage status. Return to Lisbon in the late afternoon, concluding the day’s exploration.
