DESTINATION: British Columbia / Canada
Wildlife sanctuary: Pacific Rim National Park
SEASON: Apr – June & Sep – Oct
Day 01: Start your adventure in Vancouver on the west coast. Take a stroll around the cosmopolitan city, and enjoy maple cookies in Stanley Park, a 990-acre green space with totem poles and cafes. Meet your guide and fellow travelers in the evening. Stay at the Holiday Inn & Suites Vancouver Downtown or a similar accommodation.
Day 02: Morning ferry to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, then drive to Ucluelet with a stop at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park for a walk and picnic. Travel time is around six hours. Stay at Canadian Princess Lodge & Marina.
Day 03: Explore Pacific Rim National Park Reserve in the morning, walking along the Nuu-Chah-Nulth trail to the beach. Discover intertidal pools with vibrant marine life. In the afternoon, take a 2.5 to three-hour whale-watching Zodiac excursion with a naturalist guide, aiming to spot humpback and grey whales, orcas, seals, and sea lions.
Day 04: Enjoy an easy hour-long hike on the Rainforest Figure Eight trail, surrounded by lush ferns, Western Red Cedar, and Western Hemlock trees. Look out for Steller’s jays and Rufous hummingbirds. In the late afternoon, embark on a 2.5-hour Zodiac expedition to observe black bears and bald eagles in Clayoquot Sound. Explore the fjord inlet, spotting bears from the comfort of the vessel.
Day 05: Drive four hours from Ucluelet to Campbell River, known as the salmon capital of the world. Explore Cathedral Grove Provincial Park in the afternoon, home to giant Douglas fir trees and a remnant of the ancient temperate rainforest.
Day 06: Take a full-day boat excursion to Orford River for grizzly bear watching. About 10,000 grizzlies inhabit British Columbia, and we’ll observe them feasting on spawning salmon. A two-hour boat journey with scenic views leads to viewing platforms, where we hope to see bears, possibly with cubs, catching and feeding on salmon. Along the way, spot black bears, orcas, humpback and grey whales, dolphins, porpoises, and sea lions.
Day 07: Take a 10-minute ferry to Quadra Island for a day of exploring trails and beaches. Follow your leader’s trail recommendation, like Shallaligan Pass Trail for ocean views or Heriot Ridge Trail for coastal scenery. Optionally, join a three-hour sea kayaking excursion with guides for marine life observation. Paddle around Quadra Island, spotting eagles, oystercatchers, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and porpoises. Suitable for beginners.
Day 08: Drive four hours to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. Explore the city with its colorful gardens, British architecture, and arts scene. Visit Fisherman’s Wharf or the BC Parliament Buildings. In the early evening, board a ferry for a scenic journey back to Vancouver.
